"Nava-ratri" literally means "nine nights". During these nine days, we worship the Goddess Durga, who is the mother of the entire universe. The nine avatars of Durga is celebrated during these nine days.
The mother of universe, Durga, is of mainly 3 powers i.e., Maha KaLi, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswathi. The first three days, Maha Kali is worshiped, the next three days, Maha Lakshmi is worshiped and final three days, Maha Saraswathi is worshiped.
The Maha KaLi is the spiritual force of the Goddess Durga to destroy/burn all the impurities in our thoughts. The Maha Lakshmi is spiritual wealth of the Goddess Durga considered to have the power of bestowing on her devotees inexhaustible wealth. The Maha Saraswathi is the goddess of wisdom in order to have all round success in life and live as a human being.
The concept is as simple as this : Kali will clean your inner self, removing all the bad thoughts by burning it, Lakshmi will give you the wealth (it has a very broad meaning, but currently we consider it as money or gold which is wrong) and Saraswathi will induce the good thought to leave as a human (as per Hindu definition of human).
At my home, we worship Goddess Durga for 12 days, for the initial 11 days pooja is performed during night, the final 12 th day, it is done in the afternoon, a kind of closing ceremony. On the Mahanavami, Ayudha pooja is done. This was the first ayudha pooja for my Ritz, hence i took it to my home to do the pooja.
